Back! And it feels so good…

Finally… we have internets!

Sorry for the lack of updates/activity–we had sketchy internet thanks to a coworker’s usb broadband, but we reached the data limit and haven’t had any internet at the flat for pretty much a week now.  Sure, I could have updated from the office, but it was just one of those insanely busy weeks that don’t seem to stop, y’know?  Oh, and it turns out my contract has been extended (rumored to be a year, but I haven’t seen the paperwork yet) so I feel a lot better about all of the bills that were piled up inside the door yesterday.

Actually, the bills aren’t as bad as I thought they’d be.  A few of them are done quarterly–the water and Council Tax so I don’t have to worry about some of them all at once.  I’ve set up direct debit for the gas and for the electric, so basically they’ll come out of my bank account a few days after I get paid.  I won’t even have to worry about them–I just need to make sure the money is in the account, which is easy as long as I have a job!  Virgin Media and Virgin Mobile have also been set up direct debit.  I need to do Thames Water on Monday and Council Tax (UGGGGGGG).  All in all, bills will be totaling 175 – 200 pounds per month, Council Tax included (estimated).  It’s about average, sadly.

Enough of bills!  How are you all?  I’ve missed you!

The flat is coming together, little by little.  I finally put my foot down and bought shades for the bare bulbs hanging down in the room, as well as a new duvet cover and pillowcases.  Sadly, the matching extra pillowcases and matching fitted sheet were sold out because they were all 70% off.  Boo.  So hopefully between Monday and Wednesday, they’ll have more in and we’ll have a nice looking bedset.  I’m super chuffed (Brit-speak for thrilled) about the light shades though.  They’re acrylic chandeliers, and though they were cheap, they look really cool and boudoir-ish… plus they hide our ugly energy saver bulbs!  Here they are:

And here’s the duvet set; it’s actually a light grey, though it looks white in the photo.

Our new bed linen

And last night we had the ordeal of the new tv stand.  N wanted this one from Ikea:

Our Tv chest

I wasn’t thrilled about the price (130 pounds), but told him if that’s what he wanted then fine.  By complete accident, he found it slightly used on Gumtree (like Craigslist) for 35 pounds.  Hurrah!  And it just so happened to be located near where he worked!  So the idea was, he and his dad were supposed to bring it home via public transport (psychos, clearly).  10 minutes after they collected it, N called me to ask if I could call them a cab.  Hah.  But it’s here now after much hardship, and it looks fantastic!

Oh, and I had a complete breakthrough yesterday as well! I got to work and noticed that I had a slight rash on the tops of my hands, so I did some casual googling to see if I could figure out what it was.  I didn’t, and I still have it slightly, but what I did find out is what my “itchies” are!  For anyone who knows me, they also know that since the age of 16, I get a horrible itching and burning all over my skin and hives and welts randomly.  They also know that if I so much as rub up against something lightly, I get a scratch/welt.  It makes trying on clothes brutal and I look like I’ve been knifed.  I’ve always found that an antihistamine can relieve it and control it slightly.

Anyhow.  I was googling skin rashes, and I saw someone describing what I’ve had for years down to a T.  Turns out, it’s something called “dermatographic urticaria.”  It’s also known as “skin writing.”  It affects 4 to 5% of the population, and it’s hard to diagnose and there is no treatment, only ways to relieve the pain, burning and itching.  Turns out, I’m already doing what any doctor would tell me to do–taking an antihistamine.  It can come on suddenly in life and leave just as suddenly, or you can be born with.  Unfortunately, there is no cure and some people have it for life.  After years and years of searching for an answer and my family doctor having absolutely no clue, I’m 99.99999% sure that’s what it is.  In a way, it’s a relief and I feel better.    And funnily enough, there’s an artist who actually has this and uses her body as a canvas.  Strange, but cool!  It’s worth a look on google or wikipedia if nothing else.

Right-o… got stuff to do, webpages to visit.  🙂  Fantastic entry coming soon about my top 10 things to do in London.
