As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’ve been doing a LOT of book reviews these days. Actually, I’m willing to bet that many of you found your way here via a book review! I feel like I need to explain myself a bit about why I’m doing book reviews on a (sort of) personal blog–as well as a bit more about my review process.
Many moons ago (December 2012), I somehow managed to procure an advance copy of Lucy Robinson’s second novel, A Passionate Love Affair With a Total Stranger in exchange for an honest review. That was my first ever book review on The London Diaries (Book Wrap-Ups don’t count) and soon after I was getting requests from indie authors, smaller printing presses and now (eventually) BIG publishers (we’re talking the ‘Big 6’ here!). Exciting stuff! There’s nothing more thrilling or flattering than getting an email through from someone from, say, Harper Collins, asking little old ME to do a review on a book.
Plus… I mean… I get free books. What’s better than that?!
A little about my reviews: they’re honest, plain and simple. If I don’t like something about a book, I’m going to talk about it and incorporate that in my overall rating. One thing about other book bloggers that irritates me is how every book they review they “absolutely love” and how it’s always “the next big book of the year.” Either they’re fibbing a bit or they’re only posting positive reviews–or both. That’s not me and while negative reviews aren’t going to be likely to be pimped out on an author’s website or twitter account, I’d like to think they value my honesty.
I realise that it got to the point recently where The London Diaries was inundated with reviews and all things book related which isn’t what this blog is about. For a while, I toyed with the idea of a second blog, linked to this one, solely for book reviews, news etc. But, after reflecting on the idea, I’ve decided to keep book reviews here on TLD for now. Book launches, sneak peeks and author interviews are a massive part of my life here in London which is what TLD is ultimately about. So the reviews and such stay–with the idea of only publishing one per week on a Monday unless something super – crazy – insane comes my way that I just have to share ASAP.
There. Now that’s that.
Hop on over later this week for a photo post from… MADRID! Boo-yah baby!
