N and I have been in Kentucky for the last two weeks spending time with my family over the Thanksgiving holiday. After a deluge of snow and ice we decided to strap on our snow boots and take a break from the cabin fever and have some alone time. Maybe it’s because I’m reading Oh Mexico! by Lucy Neville but I’ve really been craving some serious Mexican food and have even been bookmarking recipes to try when we get back home.
One of the things I miss most about America (besides guns, God and patriotism out the ears, ya’ll) aside from my family is Mexican food. I know it sounds ridiculous… I live in London, one of the major cultural centres of the world with some of the best food in the world. Even so, I haven’t been able to find Mexican food that I like. Cuban, yes, but that’s different. And don’t even get me started on Wahaca (which I do like!) which is a bit poncy to be real Mexican.
I’m probably totally off base but Mexican to me is flavoursome, gloopy and ridiculously delicious. With a side of beans and rice and a chips and salsa starter, natch.
And that’s how we ended up at El Acapulco (pretty sure that’s them! They don’t list our location but the name and menu is the same!). Normally when I’m wanting Mexican, I hit up El Nopal (also local) which has margaritas to DIE for but N and I wanted to give El Acapulco a try. Formerly El Campesino and formerly, formerly Our Best Restaurant, this place changes hands more than I change my contacts but Acapulco seems to have stuck. And it’s no wonder!
The staff were very friendly and attentive… granted we were the only people there for lunch as the roads were a bit treacherous. They probably thought we were weird (we are) but we really wanted a margarita.
We were given fresh and warm tortilla chips as soon as we sat down with mild and hot salsa, homemade and fresh as well. We of course opted for a pitcher of margaritas because… well… they’re margaritas. And there was snow and ice on the ground. And it was a day of the week ending in ‘y’. Sooooo…..
The menu was vast and had loads of lunch options but as soon as I saw enchiladas de mole I was sold. I’ve only had mole sauce once before but I loved it… so I ordered the chicken enchiladas de mole. N had the chimicangas (fried burritos, essentially) which was a first for him.
When the food came out I knew I was about to die and go to unhealthy, gloopy Mexican heaven.
The mole was amazing and I’m even more convinced that I am going to learn how to make it. I WILL. The portion sizes were huge and I couldn’t finish my entire plate which was a shame… though I did give it one helluva try. N’s chimichanga was equally delicious, buried under all the guacamole, beans and salad. Oh my, yes sir.
Was it the best Mexican I’ve ever had? No. But did it hit the spot, scratch my itch and so on? Most definitely. I was one happy bunny as we walked home… though it may have been the margarita.
