I have a special treat for you guys today… writer Emelle Gamble has stopped by on her blog tour for her newest book, Secret Sister, to share her very own acquisition story!

Someone out there likes me…

There is absolutely nothing better than getting a call, an email, a letter or a tweet telling an author that someone loves their book. And when it’s an acquiring editor who is sending one of those correspondences, it’s even sweeter, because editors have the power to do what authors want more, facilitate the story getting into the hands of readers.

Authors are story tellers. We want to share. That’s probably the biggest reason rejection hurts me as an author, not because a single person – an acquiring editor – doesn’t get or like or want or have room for my novel on their list of books, but because when it gets turned down, it feels like it won’t ever be read.

The first novel I sold, Stranger Than Fiction, was bought on a phone call from Editor Debra Matteucci of Harlequin Intrigue. She called on a Sunday morning when I was cleaning the bathrooms! It made my day, week, month and year, and launched me many years ago.

Many years later, when I re-entered the marketplace with Secret Sister, Char Chaffin, the acquisition editor at SoulMate Publishing, sent me an email offering me a contract for  Secret Sister … here’s an excerpt…

Hi Marsha:

First, I want you to know I did something this morning I never do when reading a manuscript: I skipped to the ending and read the last half of the final chapter and the epilogue, because I wanted to make sure your story has a HEA ending. Why? Because Soul Mate Publishing is based on that “happily ever after,” and I didn’t want to have to miss out on yours just for a technicality…I haven’t finished reading your story. I don’t need to in order to know I love it, and I want it… I’d like to offer you a contract for Nick & Cathy and Roxanne. You have written an amazing, complicated journey of the heart…Congratulations for creating such a wonderful book.…I hope to be working with you soon. Please let me know if you have any questions.

This book had been rejected many times because it is somewhat off-beat and hard to categorize. I was very fortunate to find Soul Mate Publishing, which isn’t afraid of blended genre books (in this case, women’s romantic fiction with a paranormal element), and even more fortunate that Char loved the book and proved a champion for it, as well as an exceptionally talented editorial partner.

So it’s thrilling to be accepted, crushing to be rejected, but most of all, part of the business of being a writer. One must never give up on your goals, because as a wise woman (George Eliot) once said, “You’re never too old to be what you might have been”. Persistence and a good book will get you published.

About Secret Sister:

To their friends, Nick and Cathy Chance have the perfect marriage. High school sweethearts who’ve been together for ten years, they’ve weathered challenges and are as committed as they were when they first fell in love. Cathy trusts Nick, Nick’s world revolves around his wife, and the future looks golden.

To everyone who knows them, Cathy Chance and Roxanne Ruiz have a perfect friendship. They connected in grade school and since then have been each other’s confident and trusted advisor. Cathy loves the gorgeous Roxanne like a sister, Roxanne has fun-loving Cathy’s back in every situation, though lately there’s been tension between these two best friends…

And then, on a sunny summer morning, the unthinkable occurs, throwing into doubt the truth of what each of these people really know about themselves and one another.

Will Roxanne’s sacrifice be too little, and too late? Should Nick’s love for his wife be strong enough to risk trusting his heart more than logic? Can Cathy’s devotion to Nick give her enough strength to convince him to see her for who she really is?

Secret Sister proves how strong, how stubborn, and how trustworthy love can be as Nick and Cathy and Roxanne are challenged to overcome the secrets, the lies … and one extraordinary twist of fate that turns their lives upside down.

Praise for Secret Sister:

“Along with being a very unique and captivating plot, SECRET SISTER offers a shocking turn of the paranormal kind. So if you are the type of person that wants ordinary romance in a book, you won’t find that here. This is a story of friendship, family, and most of all, true love and what those things can mean. I cannot recommend SECRET SISTER strongly enough… “ Fresh Fiction, Fresh Reviews
