Meat free, you and me

N and I are both meat eaters–we love a good steak.  The other night, we stumbled across a vegetarian episode of The Hairy Bikers’ Best of British and everything just looked so darn tasty.  That got us to musing about vegetarians and what it was like to be one.  How could they not crave bacon?  Don’t they want a hamburger from time to time?  And how could they not touch chicken (fried or otherwise)?

In addition to that, I watched the brilliant documentary Vegucated and it seriously opened my eyes.  I’ve always avoided watching shows/films about where our food comes from–I never ever wanted to know or to see it.  After watching Vegucated, I’m just appalled at the way animals are treated, including “free range” meat.  True, it’s about going vegan which I don’t think is something I’m ready for, but I can safely say that I’ll be eating less meat now and making very different choices.

So we’ve decided to do a little test to see how we get on–from tomorrow we’re going to have an entire meat free week.  Yep… no meat (unless you count eggs… I think there might be an egg or two in there) at all.  Will we get delirious and start having hallucinations of Big Macs and porterhouse steaks?

Probably not.  But it’s not going to be easy.  No meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?  It’s going to be a challenge for sure.  But I’ve already come up with a super tasty sounding menu which should keep us from missing the meat too much!

  1. Saturday – Vegetarian deep dish pizza (homemade by N)
  2. Sunday – Nut roast with sprouts, honey parsnips and carrots
  3. Monday – Fennel soup and french toast croutons (from Save with Jamie)
  4. Tuesday – Chickpea stew with lemon chilli cous cous (amended from Jamie’s 15 Minute Meals)
  5. Wednesday – Stephs vegetarian squash chilli
  6. Thursday – Cheesy Pasta Broccoli & Cauliflower Bake
  7. Friday – BBQ baked beans with smashed sweet potato (from Save with Jamie)
  8. Saturday – We’ll be trying out one of our local vegetarian curry houses which I’ll review

Can you tell we’re Jamie Oliver fans?  No?

So I’ll post up the recipe and photos each day as well as just a little blurb about how I’m feeling.  This is such a drastic change from my normal diet… I’m equal parts excited and anxious.  Who knows, maybe we’ll give up meat for good?  Doubtful, but it’ll be interesting for sure.

  1. I’ve been gradually cutting down on meat since before Christmas. I haven’t had bacon in well over a month and am down to about 1-2 meaty days a week. I feel better for contributing to less animal deaths and am saving money on shopping as well. Good luck on your quest! x

  2. I make a pretty mean veggie chilli (if I do say so myself :O) ) using quorn mince and loadsa vegetables (carrots, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, even potato or whatever you like). It’s all about the spices – cumin, chilli, etc. I prefer it to meat chilli as it’s lighter and less oily. Give it a whirl.
