Y’all. I just had the best breakfast ever.
Not kidding. And I LOVE breakfast so that’s saying something.
Back when we first moved to Virginia, I was busy scoping out places to try in Charlottesville and stumbled across Ace Biscuit and Barbecue. I think it might have been on one of those “Best of” lists, but to be honest I can’t even remember anymore. That’s how long ago it was.
This morning, we got up early to do our weekly grocery shopping. I’m a total grump if I don’t get breakfast and coffee first thing. We had nothing for breakfast. No toast, no bagels, not even something leftover from the night before that I could munch on.
Needless to say, it wasn’t the most pleasant morning for either of us.
While loading up the car, we debated where to grab breakfast. Waffle House? Nah. IHOP? Too many kids. Chick-fil-A? Meh. I perked up. “What about that biscuit place we heard about?” Nick vaguely remembered me mentioning it months ago. So I got to Googling and we put the address in the car’s sat-nav.
After a few wrong turns (Cville is notorious for being confusing), we were there. Except I was 100% sure we weren’t. We were on a shady little street that looked largely residential with no restaurant in sight.
But sure enough, there it was, an unprepossessing brick and concrete block building next to an independent distillery called Vitae Spirits.
A visiting baseball team had just rocked up, so the tiny little place was rammed and there was quite a long wait to order. Thankfully there’s seating outside, so that wasn’t an issue at all. The atmosphere was pretty chill and there was some great 90s alt-rock going on (Pearl Jam’s “Yellow Ledbetter,” one of my favorite songs). I was almost worried this was going to be one of those “too-hip-for-you” kind of places, but thankfully I was way off on that.
The menu is everything you could want in a breakfast/brunch spot. Ham biscuits, biscuits and gravy, chicken and waffles–these guys do a little bit of everything.
Nick and I both went with the Brisket Biscuit with a side of hash browns. We’re rookies when it comes to ordering food. Most of the time we wind up ordering the same thing so there’s no sharing action going on. Need to change that.
Anyhow. That sammich though.
The brisket was sliced and nice and smokey, as any good brisket should be. There wasn’t any overpowering spice to the brisket rub–the meat spoke for itself loud and proud. With a nice over easy egg on top, the yolk bust with the first bite and made everything just that right level of oozy and gooey that is sheer perfection. The hash browns were super yum too.
Now, let’s talk sauces for a minute.
When it comes to barbecue, the sauce is arguably just as important as the meat. A not so nice sauce can ruin hours of smoking and hard work. Not a good time. Ace has several to choose from and, full disclosure, I tried a taste of all of them.
I went with my favorite on the sandwich–the Bold & Spicy with a sweet molasses base. For the potatoes, I used a mix of the Virginia Red and their homemade hot sauce because c’mon… hash browns gotta have the hot sauce.
The portions were not “gut-killer” size. We were satisfied but not full to the point of feeling disgusting. That can be a hard balance to achieve and Ace Biscuit nails it. We walked out happy and (much) less grumpy and ready to face the rest of Saturday. We’re already planning on going back next Saturday when my younger sister and her soon to be hub-thang visit for the weekend. I’m already eyeing up something magical called the Ol’ Dirty Biscuit.
